Bel Ombre is a beautiful village located on the southwest coast of Mauritius, in the district of Savanne, about 45 minutes from the International Airport. Its picturesque landscapes, white sand beaches, turquoise lagoon and pleasant climate make it a popular tourist destination off the beaten track.
Until 1999, the sugar industry was the main activity of the village outside fishing. At the closure of the plants and under the impulse of some hotel groups, the village is turning more and more towards the tourism economy.
However, the cultivation of sugar cane is present everywhere in Bel Ombre which will not fail to remind you of the era of planters. Its former colonial home is one of the most beautiful on the island.
Previously composed mainly of planters and laborers, the current population is mainly composed of fishermen, loggers, laborers, farmers and of course employees working in hotels and villas in the region.
This authenticity and its harmony make it one of the most popular destinations in Mauritius.
